Utilization of Bau Du Site

In this field trip, students of the Graduate Program in Cultural Resource Management from Kanazawa University got opportunity to learn cultural heritage management, museum and archaeology in Vietnam for about one week. From March 5th to 7th, 2017, we participated specifically in archaeological research. In this internship, we mainly experienced archaeological surveying and excavating in Bau Du archaeological site. Bau Du archaeological site is located on Nui Thanh district, the central province of Quang Nam.From 1980s, archaeological researches were conducted for several times. At that time, a lot of shells, human bones and stone tools were found. However, potteries have not been found from this site. This site is regarded as one of the earliest sites in central Vietnam without a vestige of potteries. In this archaeological research, the researchers in Southern Institute of Social Sciences, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences cooperated with experts in Australian National University and Sapporo Medical University, Japan, and we could participate in their excavation process.

In this internship, what I found in the Bau Du site most different from my research field, Mesoamerica was the nature of the sites. Actually, both of them are the same in the point they are corresponded to the stage of using stone tools. However, while most of the relics in Bau Du site are “flat” one, most of remnants in Mesoamerica are “dimentional” one like pyramids. When researchers excavated pyramids in Mesoamerica, they sometimes adopt one way which is called “tonnel excavation method”. This method is for excavating horizontal direction. Therefore, there is a difference between the excavational method of Bau Du site and that of Mesoamerican site.

Next, I mention as for possibility of utilization for cultural resouces. To begin with, I expect contributuion to museum. As mention above, Bau Du site is very important site to reconstruct prehistorical culture in central Vietnam. If museum exhibitions which is based on research result will be conducted, I think they can produce exhibitions  about regional history and Vietnamese history which is based on latest research results for visitors. In addition, Bau Du site can contribute to regional community or the local people. In this research, excavation was conducted next to the land owner’s house. So, the land owner and its family helped some excavational works and neibouring children observed excavaiton scenes. Such opportunities can be a clue to hold interests about their country’s history and thier own identity. Also, it may link to bring up people with appreciations for archaeological research. Thus, I think we could expect thatBau Du site can be utilized for not only conventional academic research, but also activities involving regional society and people.
